What was the inspiration behind the piece? I was inspired by Andy Warhol's work from his Silver Factory Studio days in New York City when he was fascinated with silver. At one point, his entire studio was shrouded in tin foil, silver paint, and fractured mirrors.
Can you tell us about the design elements (process and final product)? Glitter nail polish often lacks subtlety; the tendency is to use too many shapes and colors in one matrix, but I wanted JINsoon "Shake It" to be simple and repetitive, in the spirit of Andy Warhol's work. Glitters are produced using flecks of mylar that vary greatly in shape and color. Finding the right mix of shapes and colors is more challenging than meets the eye. I spent a lot of time in the lab blending mixes from a vast palette of options, some of which were custom made for this project. Often, what looks good in a bottle doesn't look good on one's nails. It's all about trial and error and staying true to the theme.
What inspires them about Andy and his work? HyangSook, the painter and I like the "absolute" quality of Andy's work - he always held firm to a single or an alliterative idea, yielding a unified result. His work was never visually boring and it has enduring, classic appreciation, which is why it remains so imitated to this day.
We believe that the nail polish should be as healthful and eco-friendly yet enduring as possible, therefore we slightly changed the ingredients to ensure that most of the JINsoon formulas are now 10-free and formulated without harsh chemicals such as Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP, Formaldehyde resin, Camphor, Xylene, Ethyl Tosylamide, Triphenyl phosphate, Parabens, Lead but we are working on making sure that all our colors are going to be 10-Free in the near future. This color is 10-Free.
